(My Sportsbook) - The Jets almost ended the Patriots' winning streak in Week 16, but a career-high five Chad Pennington interceptions were too much to overcome. The Jets lost 21-16, but the game wasn't decided until Pennington's fifth interception in the game's final minute.
"He's going to have games like that," said Jets head coach Herman Edwards of his star quarterback. "If you watched Brett Favre on Monday night -- he was as hot as he could be. But I also saw Brett Favre on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit and that was Brett Favre, too. That's a Hall of Fame quarterback."
Favre had over 300 yards in the first half Monday night, but on Thanksgiving he threw three interceptions in a loss to the Lions.
The Jets wrap up the 2003 campaign on Sunday in Miami against the Dolphins, who also missed out on the postseason.
Pennington did not play in the Week 2 game against Miami. His new favorite receiver had a breakout game against the Dolphins, though. Santana Moss had what was a career game at the time with five catches for 142 yards. It was during that game that Edwards told offensive coordinator Paul Hackett to throw on every down in the fourth quarter because the team could not run the ball.
The Jets' running game is much improved since the team's first meeting with the Dolphins and Curtis Martin should get enough carries to keep the Dolphins' defensive ends honest. Jason Taylor and Adewale Ogunleye have combined for 26 sacks -- the most of any pair of defensive ends. If they can line up and get to Pennington, it will be a long day for the young quarterback.
By running, the Jets can keep the Dolphins off balance. When they run, the Jets will try and run at Ogunleye, who is an excellent pass rusher but a poor run defender.
Pennington is eager to play again after his career-worst performance.
"I try not to fall into the trap of saying it's just one of those days because I don't believe in that," Pennington said. "I believe if you prepare correctly and play like you are capable of playing -- you can avoid a lot of those days. But the reality is it happened to me and now I have to learn from it and move on."
It will be easier to move on if the offensive line plays well. The Jets will be doing some experimenting during their final game. Left guard Dave Szott is likely out with a knee injury. Brandon Moore or Jonathan Goodwin will get the bulk of Szott's snaps.
Pennington should be able to throw on Miami. The Dolphins' safeties have been disappointing all season. Miami's pass defense is the weak link of the unit. It ranks 19th in the NFL with 210 yards per game against.
