Maui, HI (My Sportsbook) - Fuzzy Zoeller and Peter Jacobsen parred the first playoff hole Sunday to win the Champions Skins Game.
That par gave the duo six skins and $320,000.
"It's a crazy game and things were just falling our way," joked Zoeller. "Guys were missing putts and we had an opportunity to make a couple to get us into the positive category and it just blossomed from there."
Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, who won this event last year, ended alone in second. Nicklaus missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th in regulation that would have give them their second straight win here. Instead, they settled for second place with eight skins and $270,000.
Gary Player and Loren Roberts collected three of their four skins on Sunday to finish in third with $180,000. Arnold Palmer and Jay Haas were shutout on the North Course at Royal Kaanapali Golf Course.
Jacobsen collected two skins and $80,000 when he sank an eight-foot par putt on the 11th for the team's first two skins.
The following two holes were halved with birdies. After Jacobsen dropped his approach to six feet, Zoeller drained the birdie effort for the win. That gave them three more skins and an additional $140,000.
Roberts got he and Player on the board with a 20-foot birdie putt at the 17th. That putt was worth three skins and $150,000.
Nicklaus had his chance to win the event on the 18th, but his birdie putt stayed above ground.
"The first putt on 18 was straight and we read it to go right," explained Watson. "We couldn't believe it. The first putt, Jack said he pulled. The second putt (in the playoff), he said he hit it where he wanted to and it stayed there and went a little left."
The playoff hole came down to Watson-Nicklaus and Jacobsen-Zoeller. Nicklaus knocked his second shot into a bunker and Watson blasted to 22 feet. Nicklaus missed the par-saving putt, opening the door for Jacobsen and Zoeller.
Zoeller's approach stopped 35 feet from the stick and Jacobsen rolled the birdie effort to a foot. Zoeller kicked that in for the win.
"The par on the last hole was great because the wind was howling," said Jacobsen.
