Houston, TX (My Sportsbook) - Jonny Magallon scored two goals for Mexico but his team was held to a 2-2 draw by the United States at Reliant Stadium on Wednesday.
The Mexican defender scored his first goal in the 35th minute after the United States opened the scoring through Oguchi Onyewu in the 29th. The Americans then went in front before halftime as 18-year-old Jozy Altidore gave them the lead, but Magallon pulled Mexico level for good shortly after the break.
The result leaves Mexico winless in its last 10 games on American soil with an 0-8-2 mark since 2000, but it is a far better result than they have been accustomed to lately. Entering the match, Mexico had been outscored 15-1 in those previous nine games, but they were every bit as good as the United States on this night.
Mexico came out strong and pressured the Americans midway through the opening half as they created three scoring chances in two minutes.
Carlos Salcido put the first shot on target from 25 yards before Antonio De Nigris got down the right wing and forced another save from goalkeeper Tim Howard. Carlos Vela had a chance one minute later with a free shot from the middle of the box but he put his effort over the net.
The first goal came six minutes later against the run of play as the Americans made the most of their first chance and went ahead 1-0. Landon Donovan tracked down the ball on the right wing and floated it into the box. Onyewu was left unmarked at the back post and he headed the ball off the far post and into the net, leaving Mexican keeper Guillermo Ochoa standing.
Mexico answered minutes later from a free kick when Pavel Pardo swung the ball into the box from the right and found Magallon, who volleyed it home at the back post.
It took just five minutes for the Americans to go back in front as Drew Moor drove a perfect cross into the center of the box from the right, allowing Altidore to beat the keeper with a glancing header.
Clint Dempsey thought he put the United States up 3-1 right before the half with a strike from 20 yards but he was called for offsides, keeping it a one- goal game.
It took less than two minutes after the break for Mexico to equalize, once again on a set piece. The corner kick was driven into the box and flicked on at the near post by Salcido. It fell into the path of Magallon and he beat his man to the ball and finished from close range for his second goal of the match.
Mexico tried to take the lead midway through the half as Pardo's free kick from 30 yards was saved comfortably, and Vela's close-range effort was deflected just wide by Moor.
A few dangerous crosses made for anxious moments in the American defense but no Mexican player was able to get on the other end and the two rivals had to settle for a draw.
