Kaupulehu-Kona, HI (My Sportsbook) - Fred Funk would like to win $2 million on two different tours this season.
He's off to a good start.
After collecting nearly $200,000 in two PGA Tour starts, Funk opened the Champions Tour season with a win by shooting a seven-under 65 on Sunday to beat Allen Doyle at the MasterCard Championship.
Funk collected $300,000 for the victory, his third in three seasons on the 50- and-over circuit. He finished at 21-under 195, bolstered by a 63 on Saturday at Hualalai.
Doyle, the 11-time Champions Tour winner with the homespun swing, did little wrong Sunday in a head-to-head with Funk that resembled match play down the stretch.
The overnight leader by a shot, Doyle carded a final-round 64 to end two shots back at 19-under 197. Ahead by as many as four on Sunday, he ended his round with five consecutive pars, most of them scrambling.
Funk birdied the last two holes for the win, making a 20-foot chip from the fringe at the 17th to move ahead, then rolling in an eight-foot birdie putt at the 18th for good measure.
In Hawaii for last week's Sony Open on the PGA Tour -- where he tied for 10th place -- Funk will remain in the 50th state to defend his 11-shot win at last year's Turtle Bay Championship.
That tournament begins on Friday.
"Our tour minister had a great message the other night about climbing the mountain and being on top, but living in the valleys. Obviously I'm at the peak this week, but most of the year you're down in the valley trying to climb up," Funk said.
"I just feel so blessed. It's fantastic where my life has gone."
Bernhard Langer matched Funk's seven-under 65 on Sunday and climbed from a tie for ninth place overnight into a tie for third place with Jay Haas (67) at 17- under 199.
Tom Purtzer, the first-round leader after a 62 on Friday, shot his second consecutive 69 to finish in fifth place at 16-under 200. John Cook (66) was another shot further back at 201, with Loren Roberts (69) at 202.
Funk is coming off a season in which he won one both tours: at Turtle Bay on the Champions Tour, and at the PGA Tour's new event in Mexico. That last win came in a playoff as Funk battled back problems over the weekend.
Sunday, he trailed Doyle by four shots after the seventh hole. But he rallied with birdies on three of the next five, pulling into a share of the lead when he made a 26-foot birdie putt at the 12th.
Funk nearly holed out for eagle at the 13th, setting up a tap-in birdie and putting the pressure on Doyle. Doyle responded with a 21-foot birdie putt to preserve the tie, but it would be his last birdie.
Missing short birdie putts at the 14th and 15th holes, Funk finally moved ahead of Doyle with his chip-in from beside the green at the 17th. Doyle made a routine par there, then hit into a greenside bunker at the 18th.
One of the tour's shortest-hitters -- even shorter than the distance- challenged Funk -- Doyle played from behind his twosome partners all weekend long. First Purtzer on Saturday, then Funk on Sunday.
In the end, that's where he ended up. Behind.
