Carson, CA (My Sportsbook) - The United States Men's national team's (MNT) Landon Donovan was able to reach a historic milestone in front of his friends and family at The Home Depot Center, the home stadium of his club team - Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy - on Saturday night in a 2-0 U.S. win over Sweden in an international friendly.
With a penalty kick goal to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead three minutes after the first half break, Donovan, who is already the U.S.'s all-time leader in assists with 27, broke a tie with Eric Wynalda to become the MNT's all-time leader in goals with 35.
"It would be better if it wasn't on a penalty (kick) but I'm happy," Donovan said after the game. "I'm proud of it."
Pretty impressive feat for a player that won't turn 26 until March 5.
Also impressive was the fact that the U.S. was able to earn a decisive victory with a roster of mostly domestic players against a team preparing to play in this summer's European Championships. Ten of the 11 U.S. starters ply their trade in MLS. The lone non-domestic starter was left back Ramiro Corrales, who plays for SK Brann, the current Norwegian champion.
Sweden, which beat the U.S. 1-0 on home soil in a friendly last summer, also didn't field its top squad, and it showed for the first 30 minutes of the contest with the U.S. dominating.
Three players who aren't usually fixtures on the MNT hooked up for the game's first goal 15-minutes in. Winger Brad Davis fired a corner kick to the near post to forward Pat Noonan, who flicked the ball on goal. Sweden goalkeeper Rami Shaaban did well to make the save but central defender Eddie Robinson - who was earning his first cap - pounced on the rebound and one-timed it into the upper right side of the net.
With the goal, Robinson became the 44th player in U.S. Soccer history to get their first goal while earning their first cap with the senior national team.
Sweden gained momentum in the latter stages of the first half, but goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who has been rumored to be heading oversees from MLS's Chivas USA in the winter transfer window, made a series a point-blank saves to keep the Swedes scoreless at the break.
Second-half substitute Jozy Altidore teamed up with Noonan to help the U.S. double its lead in the 48th minute. After Noonan received a low ball from Drew Moore on the right side of the box, he played it inside the six to the 18-year-old Altidore, who was pulled down by the defense, drawing Donovan's historic PK.
Donovan made no mistake on the chance, burying it in the right corner.
That was how the score stayed as both teams ground out much of the second half in the midfield while giving a number of players a chance to see the field early in the '08 international season. Donovan left to a standing ovation in 81st minute with the game in hand.
NOTES: Saturday night's match vs. Sweden was 500th international match for the MNT. With the win, the squad improved to 194-194-112 all-time. ... The U.S. will be back in action Feb. 6 when it hosts Mexico at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.
