Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (My Sportsbook) - Jay Haas was named Player of the Year on the Champions Tour, it was announced on Tuesday by PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem.
Haas, who won the award for the second consecutive season, collected four victories this year on the Champions Tour and won his second straight Arnold Palmer Award as the tour's leading money winner.
However, this award was by no means a lock. Haas' last win came at the Bank of America Championship in June and he failed to capture a major this year. Loren Roberts took home the year-long Charles Schwab Cup title and its $1 million annuity.
Haas did win the money title by more than $400,000 over Roberts. Haas had 18 top 10s in 27 starts and no other player posted more than two victories on the Champions Tour in 2007.
Roberts was also on the ballot, as were U.S. Senior Open winner Brad Bryant, R.W. Eaks and Denis Watson, who took home this year's Senior PGA Championship.
Tuesday was not a total wash for Watson. He was named Rookie of the Year in a vote of his peers, taking the title over bigger names such as Fred Funk, Scott Hoch, Mark O'Meara and Nick Price.
Watson trumped Eduardo Romero on the back nine Sunday at the Senior PGA Championship for his first win in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since his three- title season of 1983.
Watson also won the Boeing Classic when he eagled the second playoff hole. He ended the largest playoff in Champions Tour history that Sunday when seven players made it to the extra session.
Eaks also walked off with some hardware on Tuesday, earning the Comeback Player of the Year award. He won twice in 2007 and finished sixth on the money list.
