Orlando, FL (My Sportsbook) - Larry and Josh Nelson fired a 12-under 60 on Saturday to take the first-round lead at the Del Webb Father/Son Challenge.
David Duval and stepson Deano Karavites were a shot behind at 11-under 61, while Arnold Palmer and grandson Sam Saunders led a group of four teams that were tied at 10-under 62.
They were joined by Mark and Shaun O'Meara, Raymond and Robert Floyd and Curtis and Thomas Strange.
The Nelsons closed with an eagle at the 18th hole to take their one-shot lead over Duval and Karavites.
But it was interesting to see Duval near the top of the leaderboard at all.
Once the top-ranked player in the world, Duval has battled back and swing problems since winning the British Open in 2001 for his only major championship.
He stated making the 2008 Ryder Cup team as his newest career goal, and believes winning again is in his near future.
"I'm really close to having that back in my game," said Duval, now 36. "In general, I feel very good about my game."
Palmer, no longer playing golf competitively, is a mere shadow of his old self -- a 78-year-old icon who spends most of his time tending to his many businesses (one of them, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children & Women, is a tournament beneficiary).
On Saturday, his grandson did most of the heavy lifting.
"It's been a while (since I played). Sam played really well, there's no doubt about that," said Palmer. "Once in a while I was there for him to tap in a putt for a birdie or par."
The tournament is being played at the Greg Norman-designed course at ChampionsGate Resort, and Norman combined with son Gregory to shoot a nine- under 63 on Saturday.
Bob and Kevin Tway, who tied for second place last year, were also at 63.
Two-time defending champions Bernhard and Stefan Langer opened with an eight- under 64 to share ninth place with Vijay and Qass Singh, who shared second place with the Tways last year.
Fuzzy Zoeller and his daughter, Gretchen, comprised the most unique pairing in the 18-team event and they posted a seven-under 65 to stand 11th.
Jack and Gary Nicklaus joined Tom and David Kite, Craig and Chris Stadler, and Tom and Thomas Lehman at six-under 66.
Hale and Steve Irwin (67), Billy and Bob Casper (69) and Lee and Daniel Trevino (71) rounded out the field.
