San Juan, PR (My Sportsbook) - This portion of the championship round of the first-ever Puerto Rico Tip-Off pits the VCU Rams against 18th-ranked Arkansas at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan. After defeating the College of Charleston in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday by a convincing 75-49 margin, the Razorbacks were themselves stunned by Providence on Friday in a 67-51 setback. After holding the first two opponents of the season below 50 points, Arkansas's defense became a little too loose and allowed the Friars to run away with the victory two days ago. As for the Rams, they too suffered their first loss of the 2007-08 campaign on Friday when they bowed to Miami in a 69-63 affair. Prior to that VCU had taken care of Houston in the opening round of this tournament and six days earlier conquered Maryland-Eastern Shore at home. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools, this is the first-ever meeting. Shooting just 7-of-38 from the field in the first half on Friday, the Rams set themselves up for defeat early on against Miami. but don't fault Eric Maynor for the team's shortcomings because he finished the contest 10-of-20 from the floor and 6-of-8 at the free-throw line for a team-high 27 points. Maynor, the only player in double figures for the Rams, added a team-best six assists as well. The rest of the VCU starters combined to shoot just 7-of-23 from the floor, as Michael Anderson posted just five points to go along with his team- best nine rebounds before fouling out. The first two games of the season saw Maynor struggle with his shot selection and although he now leads the team with his 15.0 ppg, he's still making a mere 36.6 percent from the floor and 14.3 percent beyond the arc. Jamal Shuler and Anderson chip in with 14.0 and 10.0 ppg, respectively, the latter clearing a team-high seven rebounds per game as well. The Hogs averaged barely one field goal attempt per minute in their meeting with Providence on Friday, resulting in a dismal 51-point performance by the nation's 18th-ranked program. Patrick Beverley ended up with a team-high 14 points in 38 minutes of work, yet he made only 3-of-11 shots from the floor and tried to carry the program as the only player with more than a single made free-throw (7-of-8). Darian Townes chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench for a team that was guilty of an unthinkable 32 turnovers, tying a school record in the process. Beverley, a 37.1 percent shooter from the field, accounts for a team-best 15.0 ppg, followed by Townes with his 12.0 ppg exclusively as a reserve performer. Defensively the squad has done well to limit opponents to just 33.9 percent shooting from the field and 25.8 percent out on the perimeter and while the Hogs have outrebounded those teams by almost 13 rpg, 29.2 percent accuracy from three-point range has hurt Arkansas.
