Bloomington, IN (My Sportsbook) - The eighth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers will play host to the Longwood Lancers this afternoon as part of the Chicago Invitational Challenge.
Longwood opened the season with a rather lopsided loss to Navy, but the Lancers have rallied for back-to-back victories. The most recent win came on Thursday by an 89-67 final over Virginia-Wise, and today's contest obviously marks a major leap in competition.
The lone game played by Indiana so far this season resulted in a 99-77 victory over Chattanooga on Monday. The Hoosiers are led by two-time national coach of the year Kelvin Sampson, and last season, Sampson's first as the leader of the program, Indiana set a school record by winning all 15 of its games at Assembly Hall.
This game marks the first-ever meeting between Indiana and Longwood in men's basketball.
Longwood has played well at the offensive end of the court this season, as the club is racking up 80.3 ppg on the strength of 49.7 percent shooting from the floor. The Lancers are also outrebounding opponents by nearly 10 boards per game. The leading scorer for Longwood is Kirk Williams, as he is contributing 20.3 ppg while also pulling down 9.0 rpg. While Williams is clearly the best player on the team, there is some supporting talent in place. Dana Smith has posted 15.3 ppg and 7.7 rpg, and he is a 51.4 percent shooter from the field. Ryan Bogan adds 12.7 ppg for the Lancers, while Lamar Barrett is contributing. In the most recent victory over Virginia-Wise, Williams racked up 29 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Smith netted 20 points and eight rebounds for Longwood, which shot 60 percent from the field as a team.
In the season-opening victory over Chattanooga, five players reached double figures in scoring for Indiana, but no individual was more impressive than Eric Gordon. The freshman guard was nothing short of sensational, as he nailed 7-of-11 three-pointers en route to 33 points. Gordon now holds the record for the most points ever by a Hoosier in his debut with the program. Armon Bassett connected on 8-of-10 field goal attempts on his way to 20 points, and Bassett showed his all-around ability by grabbing six rebounds to go along with five assist. D.J. White, the club's standout forward, managed 17 points. White was a Second Team All-Big Ten performer a year ago, and at 6-9 and 251 pounds, he has the body necessary to bang on the interior.
