Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Mike Richards' shorthanded goal early in the third period proved to be the game-winner as the
Philadelphia Flyers remained perfect at home with a 3-2 win over the
New York Islanders.
Scottie Upshall scored a pair of goals while Martin Biron stopped 24 shots for the Flyers, who are the only team in the league that is perfect at home, having won all six contests at the Wachovia Center.
It's the first time the Flyers have achieved the feat since the 1986-87 squad won the first eight of the season on home ice.
Mike Sillinger and Chris Simon each scored a goal while Rick DiPietro managed just 14 saves for the Islanders, who were riding a four-game winning streak coming into the contest.
The score was knotted at 2-2 in the third period and the Islanders had an opportunity to take the lead as Daniel Briere was called for hooking at the 1:47 mark.
However, it was Philadelphia that capitalized during the power play.
Good work along the right boards resulted in R.J. Umberger getting the puck out of the zone. Richards picked the disc up in the neutral zone and skated in on net with Umberger on a 2-on-1 break. Richards opted to shoot and flicked the disc on net from the left circle. DiPietro made the stop, but Richards followed up his shot and forced the puck into the net at the 3:24 mark.
Biron finished the final frame with 12 saves and the Flyers killed off a late Islanders power play to preserve the win.
A bad hit occurred at the end of the game. With several players fighting for the puck behind the right side of the net, Islanders blueliner Andy Sutton came charging in and slammed Flyers defenseman Lasse Kukkonen's head into the boards.
A scrum ensued and Kukkonen laid on the ice for a bit, but eventually got off the ice and skated into the locker room. Sutton was called for charging on the play.
The Flyers got the only goal of the first period. Jeff Carter worked the puck behind the net with two checkers on him. Ruslan Fedotenko eventually got the puck off of Carter, but his weak clearing attempt went right to Upshall, who slammed the puck past DiPietro at the 10:38 mark.
Biron made a couple of nice saves early in the period and finished the opening stanza with five stops.
The Islanders tied the game just 5:06 into the second period as Mike Sillinger's backhander beat Biron over the glove for his fifth goal of the season.
Philadelphia again took the lead on Upshall's second goal of the game. Carter cleared the puck out of the Flyers end and Upshall accelerated past the Islanders defense and grabbed the puck near the Islanders' right blueline. He skated in on net and went to the backhand and slid the disc past the left pad of DiPietro for a 2-1 lead at the 1:43 mark of the second.
However, New York again tied the game as Miroslav Satan blasted a turnaround shot on a loose puck in the slot that Biron stopped, but Simon tapped the rebound, which was behind Biron, into the net with 1:43 left in the second.
