Mexico City, Mexico (My Sportsbook) - Six-time winner and current series points leader Paul Tracy won the provisional pole for Sunday's Champ Car event, the Gran Premio Telmex-Gigante, at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico. Tracy, who has failed to place in the top three in his last three races, circled the 2.786-mile road course in 1:28.842 (112.893 m.p.h.), finishing just ahead of his closest competitor. Tracy is a five-time pole-sitter this season. Tracy earned one championship point for the provisional pole and a guaranteed front row starting position for the race. With just three events remaining in the 2003 season, Tracy currently owns a 14-point edge over Bruno Junqueira (205-191). Junqueira (1:28.905), a two-time winner and 12-time top-five finisher in 16 races this year, was second, followed by Sebastien Bourdais (1:29.110), Jimmy Vasser (1:29.315) and Michel Jourdain (1:29.387), who has four consecutive top-10 finishes, completed the top five. Last race winner Mario Dominguez finished 11th while Adrian Fernandez, who has placed in the top-10 four straight races, placed 12th. The final qualifying session is set for Saturday at 2:05 p.m. (et), with the race scheduled to begin on Sunday at 4 p.m.(et).
