Portland, OR (My Sportsbook) - Two unanswered goals in the second half propelled Sweden to their first-ever World Cup final with a 2-1 win over Canada in a semifinal match at PGE Park on Sunday.
Josefine Oeqvist, who came on as a sub in the 70th minute, scored just four minutes from time to give Sweden the victory. Malin Mostroem scored the equalizer for Sweden.
Kara Lang scored the lone goal for the Canadians, who after finishing 12th at USA 1999, have seen their improbable run come to an end.
Sweden will now face Germany for the 2003 World Cup championship on Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
Germany knocked off the U.S., 3-0 earlier in Sunday's other semifinal match.
Canada will play the Americans for third place on Saturday at the same venue as the final.
Sweden's Victoria Svensson played a pass into the area, which appeared intended for Hanna Ljungberg. Ljungberg flailed at the pass and Oeqvist took the shot and fired it off the near post and into the net.
It was Oeqvist's second international goal in just her fifth appearance, while Svensson finished the match with two assists, giving her four for the tournament.
Teenage sensation Lang gave the underdog Canadians a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute.
The 16-year-old Lang took a free kick and blistered it off the hands of Sweden 'keeper Caroline Joensson and into the far corner of the net.
Sweden's Jane Toernqvist fouled Christine Latham 25-yards out to set up the free kick. The Swedish defender received a card for the foul.
It was the first time the Swedes trailed in the World Cup since their opening loss to the U.S. in Group A.
Sweden wouldn't trail for too long however as Mostroem leveled the match in the 79th minute. Svensson found Mostroem after a quick restart and she blasted the ball into the net.
Having outshot Canada 17-6, Sweden certainly dominated the match.
Svensson should have given the Swedes a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute, but she failed to convert a ball that Swiatek couldn't cover up. The forward had a wide-open look at the net, but missed wide.
Sweden's Malin Andersson nearly broke the scoreless draw just moments before. She curled a free kick toward the goal, but Swiatek knocked the ball off the bar and out of play.
Christine Sinclair nearly put the Canadians ahead in the 36th minute, but her shot taken from outside the area, sailed centimeters over the bar.
Charmaine Hooper had a chance to give Canada an early lead in the seventh minute. The captain played a lose ball just outside the six, but her point- blank shot was knocked away by Joensson.
Joensson started in goal after sitting out the quarterfinal match. Sweden's coaching staff opted to sit the 'keeper after she had taken medication for an undisclosed illness.
