ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -The Tampa Bay Devil Rays claimed outfielder Chris Snelling off waivers and released right-handed pitcher Jay Witasick on Thursday. Snelling hit .246 with one homer and seven RBIs in 30 games for the Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics this year. He injured his left knee on May 10, had surgery in July and missed the remainder of the season. He began 2007 as the Nationals' opening day left fielder, hitting .204 in 24 games before being traded to the A's for outfielder Ryan Langerhans. He started six games in Oakland before hurting his knee. Witasick was 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA in 36 relief appearances for the Devil Rays this year.Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press.
