Foxboro, MA (My Sportsbook) - After a good field-whooping by Brazil Wednesday, former World Cup champion is hoping to play its way back into good graces when it meets minnow South Korea Saturday at Gillette Stadium.
Once upon a time a favorite at USA 03, the Norwegians -- still keen on making a run to the championship -- were clobbered by the Brazilians 4-1 while failing to secure the top spot in Group B. Now second in the table, Norway needs the win, or the Scandinavians could be packing their bags for home.
Norway opened its World Cup campaign with Anita Rapp and Dagny Mellgren netting goals in a 2-0 triumph over debutante France. But following a 1-0 win over South Korea, the French are breathing down the Norwegians' necks.
After the defeat to Brazil, Norway head coach Age Steen gave the South Americans credit for their gutsy performance.
"I must congratulate Brazil. They were faster than us and were the best team today," Steen said. "We are much better than that. But have no fear, we will come back in the next match."
The Norwegians are definitely the Goliath in their match-up against the 0-2-0 South Koreans, playing in their first-ever Women's World Cup. However, the Asians were vastly improved in their defeat to France after a 3-0 opening loss to Brazil.
Dangling by the slimmest of hope to stay alive, South Korean players remain positive ahead of their meeting with Norway.
"Although there is a slim chance of making it to the next round, we must create better opportunities if we are to do it," midfielder Kim Jin Hee said.
Meanwhile head coach An Jong Goan, grateful for his team to play on the world stage, compliments his team's courage.
"We had 50 days to prepare for the World Cup. I will compliment all the players. Now we'll go on and play the third game."
