Washington, D.C. (My Sportsbook) - Quarterfinal berth (just about) in hand, Germany is looking ahead to Saturday's final first-round match against Argentina more as a practice game than a World Cup outing.
With six points from its two previous tournament outings (4-1 over Canada and 3-0 over Japan), the Group C leaders were sure they were going to grab a victory in the U.S. capital.
German midfielder Bettina Wiegmann said her teammates are glad to have two positive results behind them headed into the weekend.
"It's a good feeling to start with two wins. We didn't put in a dazzling performance today, but it's the result that counts," said Wiegmann.
Though Germany itself has proclaimed average performances from its opening two matches, head coach Tina Theune-Meyer sang high praise for Birgit Prinz, currently tied for the tournament lead on three goals.
"She scored two fantastic goals in her own inimitable style, the German coach said.
At least a draw would guarantee the Germans a place in the final eight after their South American opponents dropped successive decision in their first two matches -- losing 6-0 to Japan and 3-0 to Canada.
The German players aren't going for the draw, however.
"We will win. The question is by how many," said defender Steffi Jones.
Theune-Meyer said she hopes to give some of her bench players a chance to run the pitch at RFK Stadium Saturday, however, major squad overhauls are expected as the coach wants to keep the team's rhythm going into the quarterfinals.
"We want to keep the core of the team so that we keep our momentum and don't lose our rhythm," she said. "If you had told me that we would beat Canada 4-1 and Japan 3-0, I probably wouldn't have believed you."
