Philadelphia Flyers will conclude their season-opening three-game road trip tonight when they clash with the
Vancouver Canucks at GM Place.
After defeating Calgary to open the season last Thursday, Philadelphia was dumped by the Edmonton Oilers, 5-3, on Saturday. Former Flyers Joni Pitkanen and Geoff Sanderson combined for three goals for Edmonton.
Daniel Briere and Simon Gagne each had a goal and one assist, while Jeff Carter also scored for Philadelphia. Martin Biron made 29 saves in defeat. Briere (3 goals, 1 assist) and Gagne (1g, 3a) are tied for the team lead in points with four each.
Following tonight's game, Philadelphia returns home for four straight contests, beginning with a visit from the Islanders on Saturday.
R.J. Umberger, who missed the club's first two games due to a broken left pinkie finger, is probable for tonight's game, which could also feature the debut of defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick.
The Flyers signed the former Canuck on Tuesday to a one-year deal. Fitzpatrick, 32, played in 58 games with Vancouver last season, scoring a goal and notching six assists.
The Canucks are also 1-1-0 on the season and are coming off a win on Saturday versus the Flames. Daniel Sedin's power-play goal with five seconds remaining in overtime gave the Canucks a 4-3 victory.
Mattias Ohlund put a shot on net from the right circle, and after it ricocheted off the pad of Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, Sedin punched it home from the left side for the winner.
Ohlund finished with a goal and an assist, as did Markus Naslund and Sedin, while Ryan Shannon tallied the other Canucks goal. Roberto Luongo saved 26 of 29 shots in goal, but is questionable for tonight's tilt due to a knee ailment.
The Canucks will play their second home game of the season. The franchise lost its season opener at GM Place to San Jose last Friday. Vancouver next battles the Oilers in a home-and-home set starting in Edmonton on Friday.
Vancouver snapped a three-game losing streak to Philadelphia with a win in its most recent meeting, December 15, 2005. The Flyers have won five of the past seven matchups and are 8-0 with four ties in the last 12 visits to Vancouver, where they haven't lost since 1989.
