Washington, DC (My Sportsbook) - Jason Campbell completed 23-of-29 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns, and the
Washington Redskins rolled to a 34-3 rout of the
Detroit Lions.
Antwaan Randle El had seven catches for 100 yards for Washington before leaving late in the first half with an apparent hamstring injury. The Redskins didn't miss a beat on offense despite missing wideout Santana Moss, who sat with a groin injury. Clinton Portis gained 72 yards on 18 carries for the Redskins (3-1), who came off the bye week with a dominant performance, rebounding from a tough loss to the New York Giants in week 3. Mike Sellers scored twice for Washington, once on the ground, and once through the air.
Jon Kitna was 16-of-29 for 106 yards and two interceptions for overmatched Detroit, which was outgained 366-144. Roy Williams was held to three catches for 36 yards, and Kevin Jones rushed 11 times for 48 yards for the Lions (3-2) who fell for the second time in three weeks.
Incredibly, the Lions are 0-21 at Washington, and fell to 0-12 all-time versus Redskins coach Joe Gibbs.
Campbell and the Redskins offense bridged the first and second quarters with a 14-play, 80-yard drive that ate up 7:44. Campbell went to the air for much of the drive, with two completions to Randle El of 16 yards each, and found Chris Cooley open over the middle for a seven-yard touchdown pass that put the Redskins up 7-0 with 8:17 left in the half.
"I think he was awesome, there's definitely room to grow," said Portis of Campbell. "Jason's growing week in and week out."
A 37-yard catch-and-run by Randle El set the Redskins up at the Detroit one- yard-line, and Sellers banged in on the very next play to post Washington to a 14-0 lead with 1:56 left in the half.
Randle El apparently injured his hamstring on the play, and did not return to the game. He will be re-evaluated on Monday.
"We've got too many weapons, there's other guys eager to make plays," said Portis of Washington's offensive injuries. "Anyone on this team can hurt you."
A 39-yard field goal by Jason Hanson was the lone bright spot for the Lions, making it a 14-3 game with 2:27 left in the third quarter. After holding the Redskins to a three-and-out on their next drive, the Lions got the ball back at their own 8 with a chance to get back into the game with a scoring drive, but instead went backwards. Kitna was sacked in the end zone for a safety by Andre Carter, and Washington led 16-3 entering the fourth quarter.
The Redskins exploded for 18 points in the final quarter. James Thrash had a 62-yard punt return, but fumbled the ball at the Detroit 25. Rock Cartwright finally pounced on the ball at the 3. After a false start penalty, Campbell found Sellers for an eight-yard scoring pass, and Washington led 24-3 with 10:47 remaining.
A 28-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham put Washington ahead 27-3 with just over three minutes left, and Carlos Rogers' 61-yard interception return for a score provided the exclamation point for the win, with only 45 seconds left.
