Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - Patrick Kane scored the lone shootout tally, as the Chicago Blackhawks edged the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3, at the United Center.
After Pavel Datsyuk missed in the shootout on a backhand attempt off the post, Kane skated in on Dominik Hasek and got a backhander over the goaltender's right shoulder. Henrik Zetterberg and Jiri Hudler then missed for Detroit, as Chicago escaped with the victory.
Signed as a free agent during the offseason, Robert Lang scored his first goal for Chicago, which made its season debut on Thursday and was blanked by the Minnesota Wild, 1-0. Tuomo Ruutu and James Wisniewski also scored for Chicago, and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 23 shots.
"Our skill level, speed, goaltending and tenacity shows other teams that this year we're here to play," Wisniewski said.
Brian Rafalski and Nicklas Lidstrom both had a goal and an assist for Detroit, which bested the Anaheim Ducks in a shootout on Wednesday. Tomas Holmstrom also scored, and Zetterberg assisted on all three Detroit goals. Hasek finished with 24 saves.
Detroit got going 5:37 into the first when Rafalski hit a power-play slap shot from the right point that went in past the goaltender's left side. In the second period, Lidstrom hit a slap shot from the left point to increase the lead to 2-0 just 1:39 in.
Chicago got on the board when Ruutu took a cross-ice pass from Magnus Johansson and beat Hasek on a wrister at the shoulder level 9:43 into the second.
Rafalski helped make it 3-1 for Detroit on a shot from the left point deflected by Holmstrom midway through the second.
But, Chicago rallied for two third-period goals. Wisniewski was a trailer on a 2-on-1 break with Kevyn Adams, and sent a slap shot from the slot past Hasek's right side 3:41 into the third. Lang later took a pass from Sergei Samsonov just outside the blue line, and beat the netminder top shelf over his left shoulder.
"We wanted to be a tough, stingy team in the third period, and we didn't do it," Detroit center Kris Draper said. "We feel like we let one get away."
