Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) - Petr Sykora and Ryan Malone scored 19 seconds apart in the third period to help the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Anaheim Ducks, 5-4, at Mellon Arena.
Sykora ended with two goals and an assist while Colby Armstrong and Evgeni Malkin also scored for the Penguins, who bounced back after a season-opening loss at Carolina to even their 2007-08 record at 1-1. Marc-Andre Fleury made 19 saves in the win.
"They're an offensive team that can strike," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle about the Pens. "They proved it tonight by scoring two quick goals in succession. We have to look at it and take the positives. Our work ethic was strong. We made some individual mistakes that we have to correct and play better hockey as a group."
Chris Kunitz scored two goals for Anaheim, which still must be in a daze after its Stanley Cup title in June. After five games this season -- two of which were played in London, England, the defending Cup champions are 1-3-1.
Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry also scored while Jonas Hiller allowed five goals on 29 shots in the losing effort. Hiller played in place of Jean-Sebastian Giguere, who remains day-to-day after his surgery to repair a sports hernia.
With the scored tied 3-3 in the latter stages of the third period, Sykora followed up a soft wrister by Georges Laraque and tipped the puck over the goal line from near the top of the crease with 6:28 remaining.
Only 19 seconds later, Malone sped through the slot, accepted a pass from Sidney Crosby and sent a quick snap shot past Hiller for his first goal of 2007-08.
Perry made it interesting with his third goal of the season with only 22 seconds to play, but the Pens held on for the one-goal victory.
"It feels good, especially against them," said Crosby of the win against the defending Stanley Cup champs. "We know they're on a long road trip but they are still a tough team and they showed it. They battled right to the end. I thought we played a more complete game and made some big plays."
Following a Kunitz tip-in power-play goal from the goal mouth 6:34 into the game, Pittsburgh answered with a power-play goal of its own with 3:21 to go in the stanza. After a shot from the right circle, Gary Roberts fought for position in front and took several stabs at the puck before Sykora pushed it over the goal line from in close.
Getzlaf's second goal of the season -- a wrist shot 1:25 into the middle stanza -- preceded Armstrong's tally at the 3:56 mark. He took a pass from along the left side over the blue line, chipped the puck around a defender and chopped the disc past Hiller from the crease area.
Only 20 seconds later, the Pens scored again. The puck was dumped into the zone and Sykora gained control along the lower right half-wall and centered the puck for a redirection goal by Malkin in front.
6:18 into the third, a short-handed backhander by Kunitz knotted the score 3-3.
