Tampa Bay got the only goal of the first period. Lecavalier held the puck at the low left side for several moments and flicked a centering pass to Prospal, who one-timed it into the top left corner at the 3:40 mark.
Holmqvist only needed to make four saves in the first period.
The Thrashers wasted no time in tying the game in the second period as Hossa stole the puck off of Paul Ranger, skated in on net and snapped a wrist shot into the top right corner just 57 seconds in.
Hedberg made several huge stops in the second period to keep the game tied, but the Lightning surged ahead on a pair of goals separated by 71 seconds.
With Tobias Enstrom in the box for holding, St. Louis blasted a slap shot from the right point that Prospal deflected past Hedberg for a 2-1 lead with 5:22 left in the second.
Tampa Bay then grabbed a two-goal lead on an Atlanta power play. Richards picked off a pass, skated in on net and went from the backhand to the forehand before sliding the puck between the legs of Hedberg with a little over four minutes remaining in the second.
Lecavalier gave his team a 4-1 lead when he stole the puck off of Niclas Havelid and slid a backhander past Hedberg 5:22 into the third.
Atlanta got a goal back on the power play as Enstrom fired a backhanded, turn- around pass from the left circle to the right where Kozlov one-timed it past Holmqvist with 11:02 to play in the game.
