Uniondale, NY (My Sportsbook) - Mike Comrie scored twice in the third period to lift the
New York Islanders over the
Buffalo Sabres, 3-2, in the back end of a season-opening home-and-home series at Nassau Coliseum.
Chris Campoli also scored for the Islanders, who beat the Sabres 6-4 on Friday and are off to a strong start to the 2007-08 season, mostly due to the play of Comrie and linemates Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko. Rick DiPietro made 30 saves in the victory.
Jaroslav Spacek and Jochen Hecht scored for Buffalo, which captured the President's Trophy in 2006-07 but has yet to reach the win column in this young season.
Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller allowed three goals on 24 shots in the loss.
The teams entered the third period tied 1-1, but Comrie scored less than two minutes into the frame to give the Isles the lead. Guerin carried over the blue line along the left side and, from the top of the circle, sent a drop pass for Comrie. The newly-acquired forward stickhandled through the slot and beat Miller with a low backhander at the 1:47 mark.
Under seven minutes later, Comrie lit the lamp again. He streaked down the slot unchecked and easily one-timed home a pass from Fedotenko, who was stationed near the goal line to the left of the net. Comrie's fourth goal of the season with 11:31 remaining in regulation gave New York a comfortable two- goal edge.
With 5:49 to play, Hecht somehow snuck a weak backhander past DiPietro from near the right post, but DiPietro's great save on Spacek during a Buffalo power play with 3:35 to play helped seal the win.
The Sabres opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 13:09 mark of the opening period. With Jon Sim in the penalty box for a tripping minor, the Sabres controlled the puck in their offensive zone and Drew Stafford sent the disc back to Brian Campbell at the left point. Campbell sent a pass across the blue line for Spacek, whose one-timer made its way past a screened DiPietro.
New York scored the lone goal of the second period on the power play. Trent Hunter passed across the high slot from the right side and the puck was corralled by Campoli, who released a blazing slap shot from the top of the left circle that beat Miller high to the far side 4:29 into the stanza.
