Washington, DC (My Sportsbook) - Alexander Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season and Olaf Kolzig stopped all 23 shots he faced as the Washington Capitals blanked the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-0.

The 22-year-old Ovechkin led the Caps with 92 points (46 goals, 46 assists) last season. Kolzig, meanwhile, notched his 35th career shutout.

Milan Jurcina scored the other goal for Washington, which has won its first two games of the season.

Netminder John Grahame finished with 31 saves for the Hurricanes, who outshot the Capitals 12-4 in the third period to no avail.

Washington got on the board with 5:36 left in the opening period. Viktor Kozlov skated the puck into Carolina's zone in front of two defenseman and left a drop pass that Ovechkin wristed past Grahame for his first tally of the season.

The Capitals then notched a power play goal five minutes into the second period when Milan Jurcina redirected Alexander Semin's shot from the point past Grahame to make it 2-0.

Game Notes

Ovechkin has 11 goals and eight assists in 17 career games against Carolina...Semin missed the season opener with a sprained right ankle.
