Carson, California (My Sportsbook) - A Sun Wen goal in the 29th minute helped China edge Ghana, 1-0 in Sunday's final Group D match of the Women's World Cup at the Home Depot Center.
Wen scored on a header off a beautiful lob from Bai Jie. The goal was Wen's 11th in World Cup play, just one shy of retired American Michelle Akers for first all-time.
Despite the narrow margin, Ghana did very little offensively to threaten the powerful Chinese club, who many believe has the best shot at dethroning the defending champion U.S. side.
Jie's lob from near the goalline was sent sky high and Ghana's goalkeeper Memunatu Sulemana tried to catch it, but failed leaving the net wide open for Wen. Immediately after the goal, Sulemana pointed in the air in the direction of the kick, indicating that she had lost the ball in the lights.
Ghana stayed within themselves throughout much of the contest, keeping China's potent scoring attack in check. However, their offense managed to reel off just three shots compared to China's 15.
Sulemana had much to do with Ghana's strong performance. Time and time again, the 'keeper came up with dazzling saves, keeping China from running away with the win.
Much like the first half, Ghana controlled the tempo in the early stages of the second stanza before China went on a furious attack.
Sulemana saved a sure goal from Jie in the 76th minute as the Chinese forward beat her defender and had a clear shot on net. The African 'keeper held her ground and knocked the ball away resulting in a corner kick.
Wen almost created a scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute. She sent a pass over the Ghana defense in an attempt to set up Jie, but Sulemana dove on the ball to deny the chance.
Jie had a great look at a goal in the 60th minute, but her shot rolled harmlessly wide of the net.
In the first half, it took China until the 14th minute to get into an offensive rhythm, as Wen fired her first shot over the net.
Ying had another chance in the 18th minute, but Sulemana came up with a brilliant save, knocking the point-blank shot out of bounds.
In the 23rd minute, Zhao Lihong played a great cross to Duan deep into the area, but the Mother Continent's great 'keeper batted the ball away amidst a violent collision. Sulemana was shaken up on the play, but played on.
Up next for China is Australia on Thursday, while Ghana will play on the same day against Russia in Carson.
