New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - The Oklahoma Sooners are ranked No. 1 in the first regular season Associated Press college
football poll. Oklahoma, which returned nine defensive starters to a team that ended last year 12-2 and finished its season with a victory over Washington State in the Rose Bowl, was also atop the preseason poll.
The Sooners, who received 30 of the 65 first-place votes, whipped North Texas 37-3 on Saturday to open the season.
Ohio State, the defending national champion, is ranked second after an impressive 28-9 victory over Washington without star running back Maurice Clarett. The victory was the 15th straight for the Buckeyes, who received 25 first-place votes.
Miami, which lost in last year's national title game, is ranked third. The Hurricanes, who beat Louisiana Tech 48-9 to begin their season, received two first-place votes.
Southern California moved up four spots to No. 4 after whipping Auburn 23-0. The Trojans received six first-place votes.
Michigan dropped one spot to No. 5 despite a 45-7 thrashing of Central Michigan. The Wolverines picked up the remaining two first-place votes.
Rounding out the top 10 are Texas, Kansas State, Georgia, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh.
Florida State is ranked 11th, followed by Tennessee, LSU, North Carolina State, Virginia, Purdue, Auburn, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Arizona State.
Florida, Washington, Nebraska, Colorado and TCU round out the poll.
The Gators and Buffaloes moved into the poll for the first time this year. Maryland, Oklahoma State and Colorado State dropped out. Maryland lost to Northern Illinois and the Rams were beaten by arch rival Colorado.
