Brown receives contract extension at Texas

Austin, TX (My Sportsbook) - The University of Texas and head football coach Mack Brown Tuesday agreed on a two-year contract extension with a raise, as well as retention bonuses increasing his total compensation to $2.8 million this year.

Brown has led Texas to the nation's best record (93-22) over the last nine seasons, including the Longhorns' first national championship in 35 years in 2005.

The deal, which needed approval from the school's board of regents, will keep Brown at the school through the 2016 campaign. The regents agreed to give Brown a $1 million bonus if he remains at Texas on January 1, 2009, after which he would receive another $2 million if still coach on January 1, 2010. As in his previous deal, Brown will still receive automatic $100,000 raises each year.

His new performance incentives include a Big 12 title game appearance for $50,000, with another $100,000 for a victory. A BCS bowl berth would incur $100,000, and a national championship an additional $450,000. If Brown leads the club to a No. 2 or No. 3 final national ranking, the incentive is $100,000, a No. 4 or No. 5 ranking incentive is $50,000 and a No. 6 through No. 10 ranking is $25,000.

Off-the-field incentives include $20,000 for a team graduation rate of 50 percent, and as much as $150,000 for a 75-percent graduation rate.

"Mack Brown is the right person to be our head football coach," said Texas president William Powers, Jr. "He has done an outstanding job, and in the nine years he's been here, he has generated tens of millions of dollars in new revenue. Mack is in high demand around the country, and it is critical that we have a salary strategy to keep him here."

Another contract revision holds that should Brown voluntarily relinquish his head football coaching duties he will be reassigned to another significant position with the University.

"Mack is the winningest coach in college football for the last nine years," Texas men's athletic director DeLoss Dodds said. "He brought new life to our program and he's done it with great integrity and class. He is who we want at Texas for the long term."

Brown was hired as the 28th head coach in the storied history of Longhorns football on December 4, 1997.

After taking over a Longhorns football program coming off a 4-7 season in 1998 that capped six non-winning seasons in the 12 years prior to his arrival, Brown led UT to a school-record 10 or more wins in each of the last six seasons and at least nine wins in each of his first nine seasons at UT, both of which are the nation's longest active streaks.

With an 11-2 record in 2002, the Longhorns posted back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in school history and had consecutive top-10 finishes for the first time since 1977-78. Texas capped the year with a 35-20 victory over LSU in the Cotton Bowl.

Prior to arriving in Texas, Brown, who has also enjoyed head coaching experience at Tulane (1985-87) and Appalachian State (1983), spent 10 years as the head coach at North Carolina. In 1990, the Tar Heels finished 6-4-1 and began a run of eight consecutive winning campaigns and six bowl game showings in a row.
