Columbus, OH (My Sportsbook) - Ohio State University officials confirmed Friday afternoon that running back Maurice Clarett will be assessed a multi- game suspension.
Although no definitive suspension was announced, the university issued a statement announcing Clarett's return to practice and the school's current assessment of the situation.
"We received a letter from the NCAA on Thursday with a list of allegations about Maurice," Director of Athletics Andy Geiger said. "I met with Maurice earlier this morning and went over those allegations with him.
"Our next step is to make a recommendation to the NCAA concerning the length of Maurice's suspension. Then, we wait for their reply. Until then, Maurice will be allowed to practice, remain on scholarship and attend classes once school starts, but will not be allowed to play in games.
"We have no way of knowing how long this process will take, but it will be a multiple-game suspension," said Geiger.
Clarett has been under investigation for several incidents. He has been accused of falsifying a theft report to police. Money and thousands of dollars worth of clothes and stereo equipment were reported stolen from a car Clarett parked on campus in the spring, according to police. Clarett's use of the vehicle is in question for a violation of NCAA rules for illegal benefits.
Also, there has been questions about whether Clarett received assistance to pass a class before the Fiesta Bowl.
Clarett set school freshman records with 1,237 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns last season for the National Champion Buckeyes.
Amidst rumors that Clarett will leave school and pursue professional opportunities if the suspension is lengthy, head coach Jim Tressel said, "He (Clarett) gave me every indication he wants to be back with his teammates."
Ohio State opens the season on August 30 at home against Washington.
