Arlington, TX (My Sportsbook) - Marlon Byrd and Ian Kinsler each drove in two runs as the
Texas Rangers downed the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 9-1, in the finale of a three-game set.
Kason Gabbard started the game, but left with one out in the second with left forearm stiffness. Willie Eyre (4-5) worked the next 3 2/3 innings and gave up four hits and three walks with two strikeouts to get the win for the Rangers, who have won three of five. David Murphy went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
"The guy is swinging the bat well," said Rangers manager Ron Washington about Murphy. "He looks like he knows what he's doing. He looks like a ballplayer."
Jonny Gomes drove in the lone run while Jason Hammel (1-2) was charged with the loss as he gave up five runs on seven hits in four-plus innings of work for the Devil Rays, who had won three of four.
The Rangers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Byrd punched a single to left to score Murphy and Kinsler.
Tampa Bay loaded the bases in the fourth with one out, but Ben Zobrist lined into a double play to kill the threat.
Texas increased its lead to 3-0 in the fourth as Frank Catalanotto belted a triple down the right field line to plate Murphy, who reached base on a fielder's choice.
The Rangers further padded their lead in fifth. Michael Young led off the inning with a shot over the center field wall. Byrd followed with a double and that was it for Hammel as Jon Switzer took the mound.
Brad Wilkerson greeted Switzer with a single to score Byrd and Jason Botts followed with a double to score Wilkerson. Three batters later, Murphy's double plated Botts for a 7-0 advantage.
The Devil Rays got on the board in the eighth inning as Gomes' RBI single scored Josh Wilson to make it a 7-1 contest.
