Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Ryan Howard's three-run home run in the fifth gave Philadelphia the lead, as the Phillies held off the
Atlanta Braves, 5-3, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.
Veteran left-hander Jamie Moyer (11-8) won his fourth-straight decision after giving up three runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.
Philadelphia's beleaguered bullpen took care of the rest, retiring the final eight Atlanta batters of the game. Brett Myers pitched the ninth to record his ninth save of the season.
The Phillies leapfrogged Atlanta for second place in the NL East, three games behind the New York Mets. The Braves sit 3 1/2 games back of New York.
Jimmy Rollins went 2-for-3 for Philadelphia with a triple and three runs scored. The versatile shortstop scored 100 runs for the fourth straight season.
Chipper Jones knocked in a pair of runs in the first inning for Atlanta, which finished a six-game road trip against division rivals New York and Philadelphia with a 3-3 record.
Buddy Carlyle (7-4) was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs -- three earned -- on six hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the fifth, a key Atlanta fielding miscue led to Howard's go-ahead blast.
After Rollins led off with a walk, Tadahito Iguchi seemingly grounded into a rally-killing double play. However, the umpires correctly ruled that Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar never touched second base and that Iguchi just beat the throw to first.
One out later, Howard made Atlanta pay for the mistake when he connected on his 33rd home run of the season.
The Braves got a run back in the seventh as Brian McCann led off with a single and scored on Martin Prado's double. Prado went to third on pinch-hitter Chris Woodward's fly ball to right and that was all for Moyer.
Antonio Alfonseca came up huge for Philadelphia by striking out both Escobar and Matt Diaz to end the threat.
The Phils quickly got the run back in the home half of the seventh as Rollins led off with his NL-leading 15th triple and scored on Pat Burrell's sacrifice fly. Looking to throw out at home his third player of the game, right fielder Jeff Francoeur's throw home sailed off the top of Atlanta's dugout as Rollins easily scored.
Atlanta got out to a quick start as Escobar led off the game with a single, Diaz doubled and Jones brought both runners home with a single to left.
Philadelphia answered with a run in the bottom of the first on Jayson's Werth's bases-loaded single. Burrell tried to score on the base-hit and tie the game but was easily gunned down by Francoeur.
Werth himself tried to score from second in the fourth on Abraham Nunez's single but Francoeur claimed his second victim of the game to keep Atlanta in front.
