Kansas City, MO (My Sportsbook) - Alex Gordon went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and a pair of runs scored as Kansas City topped Toronto, 4-1, in the second of four between the teams at Kauffman Stadium.
Leo Nunez (2-0) was impressive in his third major-league start, allowing one run and two hits with four strikeouts and three walks in six innings of work.
"He has good live fastball and has a real good slider," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons of Nunez. "He stayed at the knees and he had a changeup that he'd break out every now and then. He was good."
Joey Gathright had two hits, drove in a run and scored once for the Royals, who have won three of five. David DeJesus added a sacrifice fly and Mark Teahen hit safely twice.
Dustin McGowan (8-6) took the loss, tagged for six hits and four runs -- three earned -- over 6 1/3 innings. Gregg Zaun homered for the Blue Jays, whose two- game win streak came to an end. Troy Glaus had two hits and Vernon Wells doubled in defeat.
Zaun's sixth home run of the season, a solo shot with two out in the fifth, put the Jays up 1-0.
However, Gordon started the home half with a triple off Wells' glove in the glare of the late-evening sun. He scored two batters later on Gathright's bloop single to center. DeJesus' sac fly later in the frame brought Gathright home to put the Royals ahead, 2-1.
In the sixth, Billy Butler worked a one-out walk, and after Ross Gload flew out, Gordon belted a pitch onto the hill in right-center for a 4-1 lead.
With two down in the ninth, the Jays showed some life but were cut down by some spectacular defense. After Glaus doubled, Aaron Hill took a Joakim Soria offering deep to center, but Gathright leaped at the right moment to bring down the ball and end the contest to give Soria his 13th save of the season.
"I've felt good all year," Gathright said. "Like I said earlier in the year, I worked on a lot of stuff coming into this year and so far it's paying off. Hopefully I'll continue to do the same thing."
