Webb extends scoreless streak to 33 with complete game

Phoenix, AZ (My Sportsbook) - Brandon Webb tossed his second consecutive shutout, extending his scoreless streak to a club record 33 innings, as the Arizona Diamondbacks held off the Washington Nationals, 1-0, in the middle contest of a three-game set at Chase Field.

Webb (12-8), the National League's reigning Cy Young Award winner, allowed just five hits, walked a batter and fanned 10. He was coming off a three- hit, 3-0 complete-game victory at Los Angeles last Sunday and has pitched consecutive shutouts for the second time in his career. He also did it last season on May 20 against Atlanta and May 26 against Cincinnati.

The right-hander has not allowed a run since the sixth inning of a 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs on July 20, besting the mark of 24 consecutive scoreless innings he set from May 20- June 5 last year. He also lowered his earned run average to 2.77, among the best in the majors.

Justin Upton knocked in the lone run for Arizona, which has won four straight and 17 of their last 20 overall. They are a season-high 16 games over .500 and have jumped four games ahead of San Diego in the NL West.

John Lannan (1-1) was the hard-luck loser, yielding just one run and four hits over seven innings. Lannan walked a pair of batters and struck out one for the Nationals, who have dropped the first two games in the series and four of their last six overall.

The Nats looked to halt Webb's streak in their first at-bat, as Felipe Lopez ripped a leadoff single, moved to second on a sac bunt and stole third. He was left stranded, however, when Austin Kearns went down swinging to end the inning.

Arizona then broke through in the fourth inning to take the lead. Eric Byrnes singled off Lannan with one out to record the club's first hit of the night, and after Conor Jackson flied out, Byrnes stole second. Upton then followed with a triple, as the ball rolled all the way to the wall in center, allowing Byrnes to score easily.

Webb cruised from that point, and was helped by his defense when Jackson robbed Lopez of an extra-base hit with a diving catch in the eighth inning.

Game Notes

Upton's triple was his third in five games...Arizona is experimenting with earlier start times, allowing fans a chance to enjoy their evening after the game... The outside temperature at game time was 107 degrees. It was still 80 degrees inside with the roof closed...The Nationals were shut out for the ninth time this season...The Diamondbacks have won seven straight encounters with the Nationals and swept a four-game series at RFK Stadium in April...Nationals first baseman Dmitri Young missed his third straight game with a sore hamstring.
