East Rutherford, NJ (My Sportsbook) - Captain Kristine Lilly scored 58 seconds into the game and the United States Women's National Team never looked back in a 2-0 victory over Brazil in a friendly at Giants Stadium.
Abby Wambach also found the back of the net for the Americans, who have now won their first two games of their six-game "Send-Off Series," in preparation for the upcoming World Cup. U.S. coach Greg Ryan is still in the process of narrowing down the roster to 21 players for the Women's World Cup, which is Sept. 10-30, in China.
Lilly opened up the scoring with her 123rd goal for the national team, courtesy of a free kick up high from the edge of the penalty area. Lilly was playing in her record 327th international game
Wambach capped off the scoring in the 17th minute when she deflected a Cat Whitehill free kick over the goal line. It was Wambach's 74th international goal in 92 matches.
"We've been working a ton on set pieces because we know most of the World Cups and Olympics have come down to set pieces in the final," Ryan said. "I didn't think we'd get this many. We work on them constantly and probably spend four or five days a week doing some set piece work."
The U.S. did suffer a setback as forward Heather O'Reilly left the game with a separated right shoulder.
The United States, which is unbeaten in 43 straight games, will continue the "Send-Off Series" on July 14, versus Norway.
It was the first meeting between the two teams since the 2004 Olympic gold medal game.
"It was great to play Brazil because they are so different than any kind of team," Lilly said. "They are technically so good, they're quick, but they are also a bit rough. They get in there and are always right around you.
Before the women's match the crowd of close to 17,000 saw the U.S. Under-20 men's team edge Chile, 2-1.
