Omaha, NE (My Sportsbook) - Mitch Canham homered and finished with three RBI, as defending national champion Oregon State stamped its return ticket to the College World Series finals with a 7-1 win over UC Irvine.
Darwin Barney added a run and two RBI while Daniel Turpin allowed just one run over eight strong innings for the Beavers, who have yet to lose in the postseason.
Thanks to North Carolina's efforts earlier in the day, Irvine was the only team eliminated on Wednesday. Dustin Ackley launched a three-run homer as the Tar Heels defeated Rice, 6-1, at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Robert Woodard pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball for the Tar Heels, who will square off against the Owls again on Thursday. The winner of that contest will advance to face Oregon State in the best-of-three championship series that starts Saturday.
UNC is the 2006 CWS runner-up, and could set up a finals rematch with one more victory.
Danny Lehmann knocked in the only run of the game for Rice, which had just two hits through six innings. Ryan Berry absorbed the loss for the Owls after giving up three runs on three hits in just 3 2/3 innings.
The Tar Heels took a 1-0 lead early on Josh Horton's RBI single in the first inning.
North Carolina added a pair of runs in the second to up its lead to 3-0. With the bases loaded, Reid Fronk drew a walk to force home a run and Tim Fedroff's sacrifice fly brought another run home.
A three-run homer by Ackley in the seventh inning gave the Tar Heels a 6-0 advantage.
An RBI double by Lehmann in the bottom of the seventh got Rice on the board and made it a five-run contest.
In the nightcap, the Beavers used a four-run third to establish command. Irvine should have gotten out of the inning unscathed, but a two-out error allowed Chris Hopkins to score. Canham stepped in next and belted a homer to right- center that made it 3-0, and John Wallace added an RBI triple later in the frame.
Ollie Linton's run-scoring single in the fourth put UC Irvine on the board, but Barney countered with a run-scoring base hit of his own in the fifth to put Oregon State back up by four. He added another RBI single in the seventh to make it 6-1, and Canham plated the final run in the eighth with his single up the middle.
