Omaha, NE (My Sportsbook) - Bryan Petersen came through with the game- winning single in the bottom of the 13th inning, as UC Irvine eliminated Cal State Fullerton from the College World Series with a 5-4 victory.
The scoring went silent from the seventh inning on, until Irvine mounted the deciding attack in the 13th. With two on and one out, Matt Morris hit a single to left that looked like it was going to end the game. Taylor Holiday was gunned out at home, though, to keep the marathon contest going.
Petersen finally ended it in the next sequence, slapping a base hit to center as Cody Cipriano came around to score.
With the win, UC Irvine advances to play Arizona State on Tuesday evening.
Matt Wallach hit a leadoff homer to right in the second inning for Fullerton to open up the scoring.
UC Irvine loaded up the bases in the fourth, though, and scored the tying run when Aaron Lowenstein was hit by a pitch.
RBI singles from Nick Mahin and Wallach put Cal State back in front by a margin of 3-1.
The back and forth continued in the sixth, as Holiday blasted a two-run homer to knot it up at 3-3.
Mahin scored in the top of the seventh after Corey Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but Cipriano led off the home-half of the frame with a homer to tie it once again.
Mike Lissman was 3-for-4 with a homer, four RBI, and two runs scored to lead an 18-hit attack as the Oregon State Beavers routed the Arizona State Sun Devils, 12-6, in the nightcap. Mike Stutes pitched six strong innings for Oregon State, which has won two straight to start it's CWS appearance.
Starter Brian Flores was roughed up for four hits and two runs in only an inning of work for the Sun Devils, who are now one loss away from elimination. Eric Sogard was 2-for-5 with two RBI for Arizona State. If Arizona State eliminates UC Irvine on Tuesday, it earns a rematch with Oregon State on Wednesday evening.
Lissman blasted a three-run homer down the left field line to fuel a four-run second inning that gave Oregon State a 6-1 lead.
The Beavers added a run each in the third, fourth, and fifth innings before blowing things open with a three-run sixth to take a 12-1 lead.
Arizona State plated four runs in the seventh and one in the ninth to provide the final margin.
North Carolina and Louisville square off Tuesday afternoon in the other elimination game, before UC Irvine and Arizona State play in the nightcap.
