Omaha, NE (My Sportsbook) - Oregon State and Arizona State won their opening games in the College World Series on Saturday.
The Beavers, the defending national champions, got a pair of hits and two RBI from Scott Santschi and held off Cal-State Fullerton, 3-2, in the night contest at Rosenblatt Stadium.
The Beavers will play Monday against the Sun Devils, who beat UC Irvine, 5-4. The Anteaters will play the Titans in an elimination game Monday.
Joe Paterson got the Beavers into a jam in the ninth inning, but Eddie Kunz pitched out of it, leaving runners at the corners. An error by left fielder John Wallace allowed Evan McArthur to reach base with two outs in the ninth. Kunz then surrendered a pinch-hit single to right by Jon Wilhite, but closed the game by getting pinch-hitter Joel Weeks to ground out.
Jorge Reyes threw six solid innings for the Beavers, while Wes Roemer surrendered seven hits and three runs -- two earned -- over eight frames for the Titans.
Nick Mahin had two hits and knocked in both runs for the Titans, who wasted a chance for a run in the eighth inning. With runners at the corners and nobody out, Josh Fellhauer tried a squeeze bunt. However, Paterson fielded the ball and Joe Scott was tagged out in a rundown between third and home. Mahin's sacrifice fly made it 3-2.
Mike Lissman homered in the first inning for Oregon State.
Ike Davis' lead-off home run in the eighth led Arizona State to its win on Saturday. CJ Retherford and Matt Spencer also homered and Eric Sogard went 3-for-4 for the Sun Devils.
Mike Leake went seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while walking none and striking out three. Jason Jarvis got the win by throwing two scoreless innings in relief.
Bryan Peterson went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for the Anteaters. Scott Gorgen lasted seven-plus frames, surrendering five runs on eight hits, while walking three and fanning nine.
Mississippi State faces Louisville Sunday afternoon in an elimination game, while North Carolina takes on Rice in the winner's bracket at night.
