Portland, OR (My Sportsbook) - Owner/driver Adrian Fernandez captured the G.I. Joe's 200 Champ Car race, defeating Paul Tracy by 2.273 seconds. The race ended just as it began to rain.
The victory was Fernandez's first of the season, eighth of his CART career and first in three years as an owner of Fernandez Racing. His last win came in 2000 at Australia while driving for Patrick Racing.
"We had a fantastic car, especially at the end of the race," said Fernandez. "It was great to race with Paul and Michel (Jourdain Jr.). They were very fast at the beginning, my car was not perfect and I was just trying to hang with them."
"The last pit stop my car really came alive. Then Paul made a little mistake (on lap 86 of 100) at the last corner, and I was able to get by into the lead. It was difficult out there. We were pushing hard, and then we had the rain too."
"I'm disappointed for my team," said Tracy. "I just blew it and let Adrian get by me. I ran wide on the brakes and got out into the marbles."
Tracy and pole sitter Jourdain Jr. dominated the early going. The two were one-two until lap 43 when they collided at the end of the "Festival Curve." While Tracy continued to lead the race, Jourdain Jr. suffered damaged and limped to a 12th-place finish.
"It was just one of those things," said Tracy about the incident. "I saw Michel coming and I gave him room and then we went into the corner side-by- side. He then just turned right across me. I gave him room on the entry even when I wasn't sure whether he was going to make it or not and he gave me no room in return.
"Still, we have the points lead and this isn't normally a great track for me and I'm happy for Adrian."
Alex Tagliani, Bruno Junqueira and Oriol Servia completed the top-five.
Tracy's runner-up finish enabled the No.3 Players/Forsythe Racing drive to take the championship lead by four points over Junqueira (99-95). Jourdain Jr. (91) fell to third place. Patrick Carpentier (70) and Fernandez (63) complete the top-five.
The next race in the CART championship, the Cleveland Grand Prix from the Burke Lakefront Airport, is scheduled for Saturday night, July 5th.
