Enschede , Holland (My Sportsbook) - Sunday's action will go a long way in sorting out the top four teams in the Eredivisie standings as the second through fifth-placed clubs all square off with one another.
League-leaders PSV are flying high off of their Champions League triumph against Arsenal. Ronald Koeman's men figure to have a chance to extend their lead even further as they get ready for a visit to relegation-battling Excelsior. With an eight-point edge on second-placed AZ in the standings, and a big showdown with league rivals Ajax next week, PSV must be sure to remain focused on Excelsior because a win can move the club one step closer to securing its second straight league title.
Chasing PSV is a pack of teams that are still holding out hope for a league crown. While the possibility is growing more remote with each passing week, AZ, Twente and Ajax all continue to jockey for position at the top. The three teams are separated by just two points, and this Sunday's schedule has things set up for some separation to take place. Twente plays host to Ajax in a battle of the third and fourth-placed teams in the standings. The clubs are just one point apart, with the winner staking claim as a threat to PSV's throne.
Ajax held the top spot for the opening couple of months before a cold spell of play saw them drop to second. The club now finds itself in unfamiliar territory in fourth place, but can move quickly back towards the top with a win. In order to do so, Ajax must turn around its poor recent form in league play. The Amsterdam club suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Heerenveen last time out, and has taken just two points from its last three games.
Twente, meanwhile, is in high-flying form. The club is unbeaten in its last seven league contests, including six wins, and has not lost a game in league play all season. The team is just one point behind second-placed AZ with three crucial points on the table against Ajax.
AZ visit fifth-placed Feyenoord, who have struggled all season to keep up with the top four. The Rotterdam club is nine points out of a spot in the top four, and has been plagued by inconsistency all season. After suffering back-to-back losses in early February, Feyenoord has gone 1-0-2 in its last three, putting six points between themselves and the rest of the field who are in search of the final Champions League qualifying spot. AZ boast the league's most potent offense, led by leading-scorer Danny Koevermans, who has found the net 19 times this season. The club is coming off of a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Newcastle in their UEFA Cup quarterfinal first leg on Thursday, but they return home with every intention of defending their second-place spot.
In action on Friday, Roda and Utrecht played to a 0-0 stalemate.
In Eredivisie play on Saturday, sixth-placed Heerenveen hosts relegation- strugglers RKC Waalwijk, Heracles, three points clear of relegation, travel to NAC, Willem II host middle-of-the-pack Groningen and NEC will try to move into the top half with a win against Sparta.
Also on the slate for Sunday is battle between last-placed Den Haag and Vitesse.
