Tempe, AZ (My Sportsbook) - The
Arizona Cardinals have traded running back Thomas Jones to the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for wide receiver Marquise Walker.
Jones, who missed the last six games of the 2002 campaign because of a fractured bone in his right hand, posted 511 yards and two touchdowns on 138 carries last year.
The former first-round pick out of Virginia has 362 career carries for 1,264 yards (3.5 avg.) and nine touchdowns. Jones also caught 73 passes for 472 yards in his three seasons with Arizona.
"This is a trade that should be good for both parties," said Buccaneers general manager Rich McKay. "Thomas will have an opportunity to come in here and compete, and he certainly has the traits to be a productive player for us."
Walker, a former Michigan standout, was Tampa Bay's third-round draft pick in the 2002 NFL Draft. Walker did not compete in a regular-season game for the Super Bowl champion Bucs after landing on the inactive list for four games before a thumb injury pushed him to injured reserve.
"Marquise was caught in a situation where playing time would have been limited and, therefore, this trade will give him a chance to go and compete for more playing time," McKay added.
The Buccaneers acquired former Cardinals running back Michael Pittman during the offseason in 2002. Pittman, however, has been indicted on charges he used his vehicle to ram into his wife's car in their Phoenix community last month.
According to Bill FitzGerald, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, Pittman is expected to be arraigned on June 19 on two counts of aggravated assault.
Pittman earned a Super Bowl ring after rushing for 124 yards on 29 carries in a 48-21 win over Oakland.
