Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Henrik Zetterberg's beautiful double-deke move led to the game-winning goal in the shootout, as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the
Colorado Avalanche, 4-3, in a battle of Western Conference rivals at Pepsi Center.
Zetterberg also scored in regulation along with Pavel Datsyuk and Robert Lang, as Detroit snapped a three-game skid. Dominik Hasek allowed three goals on 25 shots in the victory.
"It was an advantage for me to be the third shooter," said Zetterberg. "I thought (the move) was worth a try and it worked."
Milan Hejduk scored his 14th goal for Colorado and in the process became the first player to reach the career 500-point mark for a player who entered the NHL since the 1998-99 campaign.
Wojtek Wolski and Ben Guite also scored for the Avalanche, who saw their three-game win streak halted. Goaltender Peter Budaj was very strong and made 40 saves in the loss.
Detroit has now won seven consecutive games over Colorado. These two clubs have a bitter rivalry that dates back to various grueling playoff series over the past decade.
The teams were tied 2-2 at the start of the third period before the Avalanche moved ahead on Hejduk's goal at the 3:47 mark. He streaked down the right-wing side on a 2-on-1 with Andrew Brunette on the far wing. Once he reached the inside of the circle, Hejduk fired home a wrist shot.
Less than two minutes later, though, the Red Wings knotted the contest with their second power-play goal. Niklas Kronvall and Mikael Samuelsson passed back and forth along the right side before Samuelsson settled with the puck near the half-wall and fired a cross-ice pass for Lang, whose one-timer from the opposite circle lit the lamp with 14:48 remaining in regulation.
Midway through the third, Detroit's Johan Franzen hit the post on a breakaway chance, and neither team found the back of the net before Detroit completely dominated the overtime. Although the visitors only officially registered four shots on goal in OT, they had at least a dozen quality scoring chances but failed the capitalize.
"The guys battled hard in front of me," said Budaj. "I counted at least seven blocked shots."
The first three skaters in the shootout were denied but Datsyuk and Joe Sakic both scored. That led to Zetterberg, who needed a goal to seal the win. He skated through the slot, went to his forehand, then switched to his backhand and back to the forehand before sliding the puck over the goal line.
"It was a nice move -- a fake around and then back," said Budaj. "Just a great move."
This marked Detroit's eighth victory in its last nine visits to Denver.
Zetterberg opened the scoring with a power-play tally at the 7:20 mark of the first period. Datsyuk skated out from behind the net and pushed a cross-crease pass before Zetterberg's successful one-timer from in close.
The Avs answered with a power-play goal of their own with 8:01 remaining in the first on Wolski's 15th goal of the season.
In the second stanza, the teams again traded goals. Datsyuk's great individual effort preceded the heroics by Zetterberg hours later. He sped down the left- wing side 1-on-1 against Colorado blueliner Karlis Skrastins and used a toe- drag maneuver to make Skrastins look silly before he curled toward the slot and beat Budaj with a wrister at 7:35.
But Colorado answered less than five minutes later when Guite scored his first career NHL goal. After winning a faceoff in his own zone, Guite pushed the puck high off the glass, won a footrace through the neutral zone, corralled the puck along the right-wing side and beat Hasek through the five-hole with a wrist shot.
Detroit nearly took the lead with 5:15 remaining in the second when Nicklas Lidstrom hit the post with a rocket from the high slot.
