Tampa, FL (My Sportsbook) - Martin St. Louis tallied a goal and two assists to lead the
Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at St. Pete Times Forum.
Vincent Lecavalier and Andreas Karlsson also scored for Tampa Bay, which swept this home-and-home series following a 3-2 shootout victory in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Johan Holmqvist allowed two goals on 31 shots for the Lightning, who have won four of their last six overall.
Sidney Crosby, who earlier Tuesday was named as the youngest player to ever start the All-Star Game (January 24 in Dallas), and Colby Armstrong scored for the Penguins, who had won three straight before this two-game set. Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves in the losing effort. Pittsburgh, which will visit Florida on Wednesday, fell to 3-5-2 in its last 10 games overall.
The All-Star Crosby needed only 24 seconds after the opening faceoff to give the Penguins the lead with his 21st goal of the season. He skated down the right-wing side on a partial breakaway and, from his knees while being hooked, beat Holmqvist with a high snap shot.
However, the Lightning scored the next three goals to take control of the game.
First, at 6:11 of the first period, Lecavalier's 24th goal made it 1-1. A pass by St. Louis from along the rear boards went onto the stick of Vinny Prospal deep in the near-side corner. Prospal then fed the puck into the goal mouth, where Lecavalier deflected it home.
In the middle session, a penalty to Pittsburgh's Ronald Petrovicky allowed the Lightning to skate on the power play and the hosts cashed in after working the puck around the perimeter for nearly a minute. Lecavalier held control at the right half-wall and passed to St. Louis along the goal line to the right of the net. From the very sharp angle, St. Louis fired a shot that somehow found its way between the near post and Fleury's pads for a 2-1 lead at 6:46.
Karlsson's third goal of the season 3:15 into the final stanza gave Tampa Bay a two-goal lead. He stole the puck from Sergei Gonchar as the veteran defenseman was skating out of his own zone. The puck drifted onto the stick of St. Louis, who fed it back to Karlsson at the top of the crease -- Karlsson waited out Fleury and lit the lamp.
From there, Holmqvist was very strong. His 16 saves in the final 20 minutes kept the Lightning in front, but it got interesting with 2:41 remaining when the Pens made it 3-2. A soft wrist shot from the far left point by Brooks Orpik fluttered toward the net and deflected off the chest of Armstrong, who was stationed at the right post, and trickled over the goal line.
However, the Lightning used several solid clears and clutch faceoff wins to keep the Penguins from finding the equalizer and held on for the win.
