San Francisco, CA (My Sportsbook) - The San Francisco Giants Tuesday signed free agent pitcher Russ Ortiz to a one-year contract, the financial terms of which remain undisclosed. With a 108-79 record and a 4.39 ERA in 270 major league games, 245 of which were starts, for San Francisco (1998-2002), Atlanta (2003-04), Arizona (2005-06) and Baltimore (2006), Ortiz owns a .578 winning percentage. "Russ provides us with another option on our staff," San Francisco senior vice president and general manager Brian Sabean said. "We have done our due dilligence in scouting the Puerto Rican Winter League in which he participated, and we believe Russ deserves a chance at a comeback." Ortiz was originally selected by the Giants in the fourth round of the 1995 First-Year Player Draft. His 63 wins from 1999-2002 are still the most by any Giants pitcher over a four-year period since Hall of Famers Juan Marichal (77 wins) and Gaylord Perry (74) from 1968-71. Ortiz had an injury-plagued season in 2006, when he went 0-8 with an 8.14 ERA in 26 games (11 starts) for Arizona and Baltimore. The right-hander has earned a 3-1 record with a 5.73 ERA in nine career playoff starts, including two NLDS victories during San Fran's 2002 NL pennant run.
