Coral Springs, FL (My Sportsbook) - Thailand's Boonchu Ruangkit is one-under par through 15 holes of his second round, but is still on top of the leaderboard Thursday at the Champions Tour Qualifying School.
Ruangkit is eight-under par for the championship. Darkness forced the suspension of the second round and the remaining players will return to the TPA at Eagle Trace at 7:30 a.m. (et) Friday morning to finish off the round.
After the 36-hole cut for low 70, plus ties and anyone within 10 shots of 30th position, the third round is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Golfers will go out in threesomes off both the first and 10th tees.
Robert Thompson, who has never participated in a Champions Tour event, posted a five-under 67 on Thursday and is alone in second place at seven-under-par 137.
Rod Spittle, who earned $36,528 in three starts this year on the elder circuit, including the U.S. Senior Open, shot a one-under 71 and has third place at minus-six.
Ruangkit, a staple on the Asian Tour for years, parred his first four holes, then collected his first birdie of the round at the par-five fifth. He dropped a shot at the seventh, but atoned for the error with a birdie at the next par five, the eighth.
From there, Ruangkit amassed par after par. He recorded seven in a row with three holes to complete in his second round.
Ruangkit is a five-time former winner on the Asian Tour and in 1995 finished second on that tour's Order of Merit. His last win on that circuit came at the 2004 Thailand Open.
Graham Banister managed only an even-par 72 and is tied for fourth place with John McGough, who carded a second-round, three-under 69. The pair is knotted at four-under-par 140.
Greg Hickman is one-under par through 16 holes of his second round. He is alone in sixth place at minus-three.
Perry Arthur (70), Jerry Impellittiere (74), Darrell Kestner (69) and Doug LaCrosse (73) are tied for seventh place at two-under-par 142. Graham Gunn is two-under par for the tournament, but needs to complete round two.
The top-30 players and ties will become eligible to compete in qualifiers held for open, full-field Champions Tour events next season.
