Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - The
Atlanta Thrashers will try for their first win of the season tonight when they welcome the
New Jersey Devils to Philips Arena.
Atlanta, which is winless in six games this season (0-5-0-1), is coming off a 3-2 setback at the hands of the Florida Panthers on Monday.
Ilya Kovalchuk and Yuri Butsayev tallied goals for Atlanta, which is off to its worst start in franchise history.
Things started off okay for the Thrashers, however, as last season's Calder Trophy runner-up Kovalchuk put his team on top in the first period with a power-play goal 15:20. After an Andy Sutton shot from the point was blocked, Kovalchuk set up to the left of Roberto Luongo and, from a sharp angle, tucked a goal top-shelf over the netminder's shoulder for a 1-0 Atlanta lead.
After the goal Kovalchuk decided to taunt Florida and skated past the Panthers bench and pointed to his stick blade in response to Florida head coach Mike Keenan challenging the young Russian's stick blade during an overtime contest earlier in the season. At that time Kovalchuk' s stick was ruled illegal and the penalty wiped out an Atlanta power play and the Cats' Olli Jokinen proceeded to bag the game-winner a mere 14 seconds later.
Milan Hnilicka blocked 20-of-23 shots in the loss.
New Jersey also enters Wednesday's tilt on a loss, a 3-2 defeat to the defending Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes.
Brian Gionta scored late in the third period for the Devils, who were dealt their first loss of the year after starting the campaign with three straight wins.
Martin Brodeur, who is four games shy of 600 for his career, made 17 saves for New Jersey, which was knocked out by Carolina in the first round of last year's playoffs.
On the milestone watch Patrik Elias will be skating in his 400th game, while captain Scott Stevens remains one point short of 400 with the Devils.
New Jersey owns a 9-1-2 mark against the Thrashers and has outscored Atlanta 49-19 in the 12 meetings.
