Manchester, England (My Sportsbook) - Manchester United reaffirmed its dominance over another early-season success story as the Red Devils took care of Portsmouth, 3-0, on Saturday at Old Trafford.
Just one week after blasting third-place Bolton 4-0, Sir Alex Ferguson's boys put together another impressive 90 minutes to remain at the top of the Premiership table.
A midweek loss at FC Copenhagen in the Champions League did little to slow the Man. U machine, as United took a 2-0 lead inside of 10 minutes and never looked back.
In the third minute, Gary Neville caught the Pompey defense napping, as he quickly took a deep throw-in and found Wayne Rooney charging into the box. Portsmouth defender Dejan Stefanovic desperately tried to recover with a sliding challenge, but could only clip Rooney and give United a penalty kick. Louis Saha then stepped up and made no mistake, putting the home side up 1-0.
Just seven minutes later, Cristiano Ronaldo staked United to a 2-0 lead. Saha drew a foul just outside the box, and the Portuguese international strode up to take the free kick. He dropped the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner of the Pompey net, giving keeper David James no chance.
James kept the away side in the match with a handful of fine saves before halftime, giving Portsmouth a chance.
However, the Red Devils put the match to rest in the 66th when Nemanja Vidic headed home his second goal of the campaign for a commanding 3-0 Manchester United lead.
If United is able to sustain its run of strong play, Chelsea's quest for a third-straight EPL title could become interesting. It is becoming clear that the race for this year's Premiership crown may contain just two horses.
In other Premiership action on Saturday, Liverpool got a pair of goals from Dirk Kuyt to down Reading 2-0, Darren Bent's 28th-minute goal gave Charlton a 1-0 win over Manchester City, Watford got its first win of the year with a 2-0 decision over Middlesbrough at Vicarage Road Stadium, Wigan picked up a surprising away win over Bolton 1-0 at the Reebok on Lee McCulloch's 79th- minute tally, Fulham downed Everton 1-0 at Craven Cottage and Newcastle slipped into the relegation zone as they dropped a 1-0 home fixture with Sheffield United.
On Sunday, Chelsea will look to keep pace with Manchester United with a win over Tottenham at White Hart Lane and surging Arsenal attempts to continue to move up the table with an away contest against West Ham.
Aston Villa and Blackburn finish up the week's action on Monday at Villa Park.
