Kennett Square, PA (My Sportsbook) - Former Horse of the Year Artsplace has been humanely destroyed due to complications of laminitis. The 18-year-old was put down after it was decided that there was no chance of recovery. Laminitis is a severe and painful condition of the hoof. In horses that can be fatal. It occurs when laminae, the strong connecting tissues that attach the pedal bone and the inner hoof wall, are inflamed. The condition has been in the news ever since Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro first suffered the ailment in July. Barbaro is being treated at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center where Artsplace was also treated. Artsplace was diagnosed with laminitis in late August at Southwind Farm in New Jersey where he stood as a stallion. One year later Artsplace was transferred to New Bolton. Artsplace won 37 of 49 careers starts and earned more than $3 million. He was driven primarily by Hall of Famer John Campbell and voted Horse of the Year in 1992. At the time of his death, the offspring of Artsplace have won nearly $115 million.
