Stockholm, Sweden (My Sportsbook) - Niclas Alexandersson will captain Sweden in Wednesday's European Championship 2008 qualifier against Iceland in the absence of normal captain Freddie Ljungberg. Ljungberg, 29, injured his calf in Sweden's 2-0 win over Spain in the qualifier this weekend. The normal replacement for Ljungberg as captain, Tobias Linderoth, is also expected to miss the game because of personal reasons. The veteran Alexanderson, 35, has played with Sweden's first division Club IFK Gothenburg since 2004, while also playing sparingly with West Ham and Everton of the English Premier League. Alexanderson made his national team debut in 1993 and has since participated in 83 international games while scoring seven goals. His participation in the national team includes the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups and the European Championships in 2000 and 2004. Sweden is the leader in Euro 2008 Group F with three wins in three games while Iceland faces a must-win situation with just one victory in three games played.
