Nashville, TN (My Sportsbook) - The
Nashville Predators, still searching for their first win of the season, will try and end a five-game winless streak to start the year when they open a three-game homestand against the Phoenix Coyotes.
Dating back to last season the Predators are winless in their last eight games (0-5-1-2) and have not won since April 6 2002.
After back-to-back overtime losses to the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils, Nashville played its most spirited game of the season in a 2-2 tie with the New York Rangers on Saturday.
Rookie Scottie Upshall, the sixth-overall pick in this year's NHL draft, tied the game late in the second period with his first NHL goal for the Predators, who are off to their worst start in franchise history.
The Rangers led by a goal late in the second period when an errant pass off a face-off win led to a New York turnover. Upshall raced to the loose puck and picked it up near center ice along the left boards. Upshall skated in on Mike Richter and beat the goaltender with a sharp wrister from the left circle that tied the game at 2-2 at 14:11 of the frame.
The Predators had a 2-1 shot advantage in the extra frame.
Richter stopped a Clarke Wilm shot attempt with his mask with 2:35 remaining in overtime, while David Legwand -- being pestered by a sprawled-out Richter -- hit the left post with a shot from just outside the crease with just over a minute to go in the frame.
Tomas Vokoun made 16 saves for the Predators and turned away a blast by Pavel Bure from the left circle with 32 seconds left in overtime to preserve the tie.
Vitali Yachmenev was held off the scoresheet but remains one goal shy of 50 career goals as a Predator and four points short of 200 career NHL points.
Phoenix, which is 4-2-1 in its last seven at the Gaylord Entertainment Center, enters Tuesday's tilt on the heels of a 3-2 win in Buffalo on Saturday and will attempt to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Daymond Langkow and Mike Johnson each collected a goal and an assist to lead the charge for Phoenix, which snapped a two-game losing streak and won for only the second time in six outings this season (2-4-0).
Langkow is now four goals short of 100 for his NHL career.
Tony Amonte also lit the lamp for the first time in a Coyotes sweater and broke a 1-1 tie to give the Coyotes the lead for good. Amonte, who has played an NHL-best 416 consecutive games, signed a four-year, $26 million free-agent contract with Phoenix in July after scoring 27 goals last season for Chicago.
Sean Burke finished with 28 saves, including 13 in the first period, for his first win of the season (1-3).
Last year Phoenix swept all four games from the Predators, outscoring them 11-6 and has won two straight in Nashville.
The Coyotes are 9-5-1 in the last 15 meetings with the Predators.
