Rome, Italy (My Sportsbook) - Just one day after Marcello Lippi resigned as the Italian national team coach, Roberto Donadoni was named as his successor on Thursday The 42-year-old Donadoni was out of work after he was released by Serie A club Livorno in the middle of last season. Since 2001, he has also ran the sidelines for Lecce and Genoa. As a player, Donadoni collected 63 caps for Italy, including playing for the squad which lost the World Cup final to Brazil in 1994. Donadoni now takes over a team which just defeated France in the 2006 World Cup final this past Sunday. Italy returns to the pitch on September 2, versus Lithuania in a Euro 2008 qualifier. According to reports, Alberto Zaccheroni was the other top candidate for the position.
