Toronto, Canada (My Sportsbook) - A.J. Allmendinger captured Sunday's Molson Grand Prix of Toronto. The No.7 Lola driver crossed the finish line 1.851 seconds ahead of Paul Tracy.
The victory was Allmendinger's third of the season and fourth of his career. His third consecutive victory is the most by an American since Al Unser Jr. accomplished the feat in 1994.
The defending champion and pole winner, Justin Wilson, led the 17-car field to the green flag for 86 laps of racing.
After a clean start to the race the No.9 Lola driver maintained the race lead. He expanded his margin to one second over Allmendinger and Sebastien Bourdais.
The first caution of the afternoon came out on lap nine due to a crash. Wilson and a few of the leaders took pit stops under the current caution.
When the pit stops were completed Nelson Philippe, Oriol Servia, and Bruno Junqueira held the first three spots by not stopping. The race off pit road was won Allmendinger, who was fourth on the grid.
After the restart Philippe continued to show the way. Servia, Allmendinger, and Junqueira followed behind the leader.
On lap 25 Servia gave up his second spot to Allmendinger when he came into the pits with the suspicion of a tire going down.
Philippe gave up his lead on lap 36 to come onto pit road for his first stop of the day. A few laps later Junqueira, running in second at the time, came in for his stop. Philippe and Junqueira came out of the pit in 11th and 12th, respectively.
After these stops Allmendinger took over first. He was quick to build a five- second lead. Tracy battled his way to second by out-braking both Bourdais and Wilson and now had his sights set on the leader.
The lead for the newly hired No.7 Lola driver was quickly being cut into by Tracy. Meanwhile Wilson lost another spot when Bourdais passed him for third.
On lap 47 a round of green flag pit stops began for the leaders. Three laps later the top-three drivers came in for their pit stops.
Servia, running on a different pit strategy, led a few laps before coming into the pits on lap 54. He came out seventh on the grid after his stop.
After the pit stops were done Philippe drove in first with Allmendinger, Tracy, and Bourdais following behind. The leader still had one more pit stop to make though since his last stop came on lap 35.
The No.4 Lola driver gave up his lead when he came into the pits on lap 64 for a final splash of fuel. Allmendinger inherited the lead with the Philippe pit stop.
With just 20 laps remaining the top-five read: Allmendinger, Tracy, Bourdais, Wilson and Alex Tagliani.
As the laps dwindled down Allmendinger opened up a gap of 2.485 seconds with 10 laps to go. But that lead was gone when Servia and Philippe made contact with nine laps left.
Only four laps remained to go as Allmendinger led Tracy, Bourdais, and Wilson to the restart.
After a great restart the American now had his sights set on winning three straight races. Tracy wasn't able to make a run on Allmendinger from second. So after 86 laps Allmendinger cruised past the finish line to win his third straight race.
Bourdais, Wilson, and Cristiano da Matta completed the top-five.
The next race in the series is set for Sunday, July 23rd at the City Centre Raceway in Edmonton, Canada.
