Toronto, Canada (My Sportsbook) - After winning the first four events of 2006 and building a commanding lead, two-time series champion Sebastien Bourdais has been slightly off the mark over the last two events.
After his fourth consecutive win, Bourdais was 31 points ahead of former Formula One driver Justin Wilson.
While Wilson still remains 26 points back, a third driver American A.J. Allmendinger has won the last two races to join the championship battle.
Its been a roller coaster ride for Allmendinger who was fired by RuSport after the fourth race and signed a week later by Forsythe Championship Racing. With his new team all Allmendinger has done is win twice in two starts.
Allmendinger beat Wilson to the checkered flag in Portland by 5.420 seconds and two weeks ago at Burke Lakefront Airport took a 3.279-second victory.
"It's remarkable the way he's just fit right into the team," said the team's engineer Michael Cannon. "It's unbelievable. It's just like he's been here all along. He's just a remarkable talent."
This week the series travels to Toronto where Wilson is the defending champion. Bourdais appeared to have the fastest car a year ago, but a flat right-rear tire cost him a shot at the win.
Wilson passed Oriol Servia for the lead on lap 77 of a scheduled 88 laps, but on lap 81 Allmendinger was attempting a pass of Servia and clipped the wall. Mario Dominguez came flying around the turn and slammed into Allmendinger, who was a sitting duck at that point.
The clean up from the wreck took a long time with carbon fiber pieces everywhere. The result was the race ended due to the one hour and forty- five minute time limit. Wilson crossed the finish line after lap 86 laps to collect his first Champ Car victory.
After finishing 18th last week, expect a big rebound effort from Bourdais. Not since 2003 has the Frenchman had back-to-back races outside the top-10.
"I think 'Seabass' is at the top of his game," Cannon said looking at the big picture with Gordon Kirby of champcarworldseries.com. "He's a remarkable talent and he doesn't make any mistakes. But I think A.J. is right there and Justin too, and there's no doubt that PT (veteran Paul Tracy) is about to make his presence known. It's shaping up to be an interesting summer."
The Molson Grand Prix of Toronto is scheduled to drop the green flag on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (et).
