Gelsenkirchen, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo scored the game-winning penalty kick to defeat 10-man England, 3-1, on penalties Saturday in the quarterfinals at FIFA World Cup Stadium Gelsenkirchen.
Ronaldo, Simao Sabrosa and Helder Postiga found the back of the net to send England home. With the victory, Portugal meets France Wednesday in the semifinals in Munich.
England, which lost captain David Beckham in the second half, and then Wayne Rooney minutes later, has yet to win a shootout in the World Cup.
Both teams battled to a scoreless draw in regulation time, and then again in overtime. However, Sven-Goran Eriksson's tired men eventually fell at the hands of Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo.
In the opening minutes of the match, Portugal's Tiago tried to take advantage of a defensive blunder in the box. Luis Figo's free-kick deflected off Gary Neville's leg and fell to the feet of Thiago. The Lyon midfielder, however, could not flick the ball past England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.
The excitement switched fields in the 21st minute as David Beckham sent Frank Lampard a cross in the box. Lampard, however, could not reach it in time despite a sliding lunge.
In the 30th minute, John Terry received his second yellow card of the tournament for a challenge on Tiago. The Chelsea defender would have missed the semifinals if England had advanced.
England's last opportunity to break the deadlock in the first half came in the 44th minute as Beckham was awarded a free kick from 20 yards out after Petit fouled Joe Cole. Beckham, who scored on a spot kick to send his team into the quarterfinals, could not defeat the wall and his efforts were deflected off Portugal's defensive line. Petit's yellow card sidelined the midfielder for the semifinals in Munich.
In the 52nd minute, England fans were devastated as Beckham left the field with an injury. The captain collided with Nuno Valente and was replaced by Aaron Lennon.
The 19-year substitute, however, had an immediate impact on the field. He slid past the Portugal defense and found Wayne Rooney, who took a swing and a miss before Joe Cole sailed the ball over the net.
Moments later, England suffered its second blow of the match as its squad was cut to ten. Wayne Rooney was ejected from the match after receiving a red card for stepping on Ricardo Carvalho's groin.
In the 82nd minute, England had a golden opportunity to overcome its disadvantage and take the lead as Lennon's free-kick found Frank Lampard. Lampard's effort was blocked by Ricardo and rebounded to Lennon, but his follow up did not have enough power to beat the goalkeeper.
In the second overtime, Portugal came close to avoiding a shootout as Helder Postiga fired a header into the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offsides.
Sabrosa got the ball rolling for Portugal and he rifled his penalty kick past Robinson to take the lead. Lampard stepped up to the line first for England, but his shot was denied by the unstoppable Ricardo. Owen Hargreaves scored on England's next kick, but Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher missed to send the European nation packing.
Saturday's match marked the nations' third encounter at a FIFA World Cup. The two teams met in the semifinals in 1966, where host England slid past the Portuguese, 2-1. Twenty years later, Portugal bounced back from the loss, defeating England 1-0 in group play.
